Hello, I'm Jeff Shiver Managing Principal of People and Processes. I wanted to  give you a thought regarding managing perception.

"Managing perception? What do you mean, Jeff?"

Well recognize that any time you're at work people are always watching you, everything you do or say. Your direct reports and other people are always looking to see exactly what you do. Not only do you have to manage down but you have to manage up. The challenge for you is how do you manage perception? Sometimes perception is reality.

If you're the one who always comes to the Christmas party and leaves drunk, guess what? When it comes time for a promotion, those managers that have seen that, they remember those things and they comment, "Well I don't know. He seems to have a drinking problem," as an example.

Things like that might actually stall your career. The challenge for you is to think about how you manage perception. You're always on camera, so to speak.

Have a great day. I'm Jeff Shiver, managing principal of People and Processes.
