Hello. I'm Jeff Shiver, Managing Principal of People and Processes. Today I want to share some tips with you regarding leadership and supervision, more specifically, training and development.

I've got a question for you. Is experience a good teacher? What do you think?

Most people say, "Yes." But the reality is that experience is the worst teacher.

"Why do you say that, Jeff?" Well, it delivers the test before you actually get the lesson. The challenge gets to be that the lessons that you learn might not be the right lessons. Think about all the bad behaviors in the past. Not only that, experience is slow and inefficient.

The challenge is, how do you make sure that people are learning the right lesson? Well, in the maintenance world we need to use things like checklists and standard operating procedures, and time plans. Those help us make sure we're doing it. We can also introduce precision maintenance as part of that.

I hope you enjoyed the tip. I'm Jeff Shiver, managing principal of People and Processes.
