Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM)

Almost as frequently used as Lean or Six Sigma for a buzz word, Reliability-Centered Maintenance is not about PM optimization. If everyone in the organization all the way down to the custodian knows that a piece of equipment is troublesome, the solution lies in PM optimization. Reliability-Centered Maintenance is about detective work, finding the functional failures that are not obvious. These hidden potential failures are the ones that will cost the most money and appear at the most inappropriate times.

Reliability-Centered Maintenance uses many different tools and can be as simple as reviewing Piping and Instrument Diagrams for a check valve that could fail or integrate Failure Modes and Effects Analysis on an assembly to determine the potential failures at the component level.
